On June 5, 2017 DFHRI, COCAP and FOCOS NHRC organized half day interaction program with the theme of “Free, Impartial and Credible Elections” with former Chief Justice and Chief Commissioner NHRC Kedar Nath Upadhyaya and former Commissioner NHRC Sushil Pyakhurel in Rajbiraj, Saptari. COCAP member organizations, Setu Samudayik acted as local partner for the program. Representatives of various political parties, journalists, human rights organizations and government officials (CDO, LDO and election officer) participated in the program. At the beginning COCAP presented the finding of its Peace Monitoring Project during the first phase of Local Election. During the interaction participants raised the following concerns:
• The Ballot paper for local election is too complicated
• Insufficient voter education
• The difficulty of organizing the second phase of local elections in the district without addressing the demand for constitutional amendment
The program was organized as part of a series of programs on “Free, Impartial and Credible Elections” in a number of districts across Nepal.
