Human Rights community meets Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala

Dated: 22nd December 2006
Under the coordination of Joint Forum for Human Rights and Peace, members from various human rights organizations and people affiliated to Peace organizations and Civil Societies jointly submitted a petition to the Prime Minister at his residence Baluwatar on 22nd December, 2006. On behalf of COCAP.Gyanu Luintel and Prabha Bhattarai signed the petition.

The human rights community showed their serious concern on various issues pertaining to nation. The petition focused on six main issues and demanded the government to take immediate measures to address them.

The petition demanded the government to act judiciously and to work in line with the various agreements reached between the government of Nepal and the CPN (Maoist). The sheer negligence on the part of the government to convict the perpetrators and criminals of war is promoting the climate of impunity. The petition pointed out the people who had used iron hands during the movement and had blatantly violated human rights are moving freely. They should be convicted for their crimes and the victims of war should be given due justice. The government and the Maoist should be serious to the issue of internally displaced people and people who have been extra judiciously disappeared. The petition said that the climate of impunity should be totally ended and the government should ratify the International Criminal Court (ICC) statute. The government should hold all the decisions taken unilaterally without the consent of Maoist and act responsibly in the forth coming days to avoid any misunderstanding. The human rights community also demanded that the government should make public the report of Rayamajhi Commission and consider the report of the Malik Commission and should take stern measures to punish the people who were involved in suppressing the Peoples’ Movement in 2047 B.S and 2063 B.S. The draft of the interim constitution which is incomplete should be completed in a participatory manner involving civil societies and other stakeholders. The government should take all the measures to make the upcoming election of the constituent assembly inclusive having representation of every section of the people and declare the date of the election without further delay.
