COCAP Volunteers’ Core Group organized a discussion on “Human Rights and Film” on Jan 13, 2012 at COCAP Hall, Kathmandu. Purna Singh Barayeli, President of Human Rights Film Center, was the resource person for the discussion.
Initiating his views on the topic, Mr Barayeli said that it has not been so long that people started to think cinema should raise the issues of social rights and the voice of underclass. Sharing his experience of involvement in human rights film sector, he told that he stared to think about the human rights and film after receiving the training in Italy. He emphasized on the artistic representation of reality in film. But, his concern was- “Many directors go far away from reality in the name of artistic representation”. Film is an effective medium to educate people. He strongly viewed that film should capture the contradiction and underlying suppression in society and raise awareness of those who are in the voiceless state. The mainstream films are fantasized in the name of professionalism. So, we cannot expect such a role from these mainstream films. That is why Mr Barayeli urged for alternative film making.
Addressing the quarries from participants Mr Baraely had to say that his Organization is promoting the culture of alternative filming by giving trainings and conducting human rights film festivals. Mr Barayeli is also the president of Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Latitpur branch. The discussion was moderated by Puran Darnal, core group member. Naren Khatiwada, volunteers’ representative to COCAP Board extended the vote of thanks to resource person and participants. All together 45 people took part in the discussion.
