COCAP volunteer core group organized a discussion on “Intra Party Rift and Peace Process” as a part of Friday discussion series in COCAP hall on Jan 6, 2012. Ganesh BK, a prominent human rights activist and analyst, was a resource person for the discussion.
Introducing the topic Mr. BK had to say that no political parties in Nepal are free from Intra party rifts. Every party is suffering from the groupism. We can find many groups and sub- groups inside a single party. Due to such groups and sub groups no party has the unified view in any issue. There are so-called hardliner and soft liner groups in every party. “The most important thing is whether any theory is for life or life for theory?” said Mr. BK. He also said that we have seen the huge level of political consciousness among Nepalese people after the political change of 1990. But, the tragic thing, according to BK, is “political leaders never put the issues of public at center rather they always fight for positions both inside party and in government.”
Talking about the internal democracy of Nepalese political parties, Mr. BK shared that in the issue of internal democracy and leadership handover to youth, political parties of Nepal are not so liberal. Due to the lack of unified view on any issues from political parties, the peace process of Nepal is crippling. If a leader of any political party agrees in any issue, another group of the same party just rejects it. While addressing the quarries from the floor, Mr. BK gave his closing remarks saying “to avoid the hindrances of peace process, we need to seek the practical application of any political philosophy and political parties should put the public interest at center in their debates rather than their personal and party’s benefit”
All together 25 participants comprising COCAP Volunteers, staffs, board members and other interested youths actively took part in the discussion. Mr. Naren Khatiwada, volunteers’ representative to COCAP board, moderated the program and Mr. Bashu Dhakal, Chair person of COCAP, extended his vote of thanks to the resource person and participants.
