In the second half of November, COCAP | NepalMonitor.org conducted two Regional Trainings on Security in the Field for HRDs in the Far and Mid-Western Region of Nepal. The two-and-a-half-day trainings were attended by district representatives of different HRD organizations working in the regions, including FEDO, FNJ, WHR, WHRD network, THRD-Alliance, LAHURNIP, BDS, and local member organizations of COCAP (Chetana Club in Dang and RDN, SWEET Nepal, HURADC, Women Progress Centre, CSSD, Mitra Sangh, GSM in Kanchanpur). The trainings had sessions on Human Rights and Human Rights Defenders, Introduction to NepalMonitor, National and International Protection Mechanisms for HRDs, Risk Assessment and Security in the Field and GBV and its Legal Provisions in Nepal taken by different facilitators. On the last day of each of the trainings an interaction program with representatives of the NHRCs and local authorities was held. To this end, participants had prepared questions during the sessions that they raised with panelists during the interaction program.
The program in Kanchanpur was attended by 43 HRDs from 6 districts including Kailali, Kanchanpur, Doti, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, and Achham. Sesssions were facilitated by Poonam Singh Chand, Advocate High Court, Rajya Laxmi Gurung, Training and Outreach Coordinator NepalMonitor, Dr. Friso Hecker, International Peace Worker NepalMonitor, Tika Ram Pokharel, Advocate, Deepak Jung Karki, Regional Director NHRC. The interaction program was attended by Deepak Jung Karki, Regional Director NHRC, Krishna Singh Deupa, Regional Chairperson COCAP, […] Tulsi Prasad Adhikari Superintendent Nepal Police, Kanchanpur. Issues raised by participants with panelists included the security of HRDs raising the Ram Dhulari murder case and shared their challenges working in the field as WHRDs.
The Program in Dang on November 24 to 26 was co-organized by COCAP member organization Chetana Club Dang and attended by 30 HRDs from 5 districts including Banke, Dang, Pyuthan, Salyan, Rolpa. Facilitators included Keshav Sharma, Coordinator Human Right Alliance – Dang, Rajya Laxmi Gurung, Training and Outreach Coordinator NepalMonitor, Dr. Friso Hecker, International Peace Worker NepalMonitor, Tika Ram Pokharel, Advocate, Murari Kharel, Regional Director NHRC. The interaction was attended by Murari Kharel, Regional Director NHRC, Deepak Kaphle, Chief District Officer, Dang. Issues raised by participants included property and citizenship rights for single women and reproductive rights of members of the LGBTI community.
The inclusive nature of participating HRDs in both workshops was widely appreciated and the breaks gave ample room for lively interaction between participants.
