Interaction Program on “Free, Impartial and Credible Election” organized in Rolpa, Pyuthan and Dang of Province 5,
On June 9 – 11 2017, COCAP in collaboration with Democratic Freedom and Human Rights Institute (DFHRI) and Former Commissioner’s Society- NHRC (FOCOS-NHRC) organized interaction programs on “Free, Impartial and Credible Local Election” in Liwang of Rolpa, Khalanga of Pyuthan and Ghorahi of Dang. Human Rights Defenders, Journalist, local leaders of political parties, District Election Officers and representatives of the District Police Offices participated in the programs.
COCAP | NepalMonitor.org presented its data on incidents of violence and contestations during the first phase of Local Elections, former Commissioner of Nepal Human Rights Commission, Sushil Pyakurel shared his analysis of the first phase and emphasized the need on minimizing certain Iapses during the second phase of the election to ensure credible and impartial elections. Participation raised the following concerns during the interaction:
- The widespread arrest of cadres of NCP might affect the electoral environment.
- Clash between rival political parties will also negatively impact the election as it will affect wether people would view the election as fair.
- Political parties have been mobilizing children for their campaign which sends a bad message to society.
Former commissioner of National Human Right Commission, Dr. Gauri Shanker Lal Das provided the closing remarks in the program.
