Interaction Program on “Free, Impartial, and Credible Election” organized in Dhanusha,
On June 6, 2017 COCAP in collaboration with Democratic Freedom and Human Rights Institute (DFHRI) and Former Commissioners’ Society-NHRC (FOCOS-NHRC) organized an interaction program on ‘Free, Impartial and Credible Local Election’ in Janakpur, Dhanusha. The program was attended by Human Rights Defenders, journalists and local representatives of Political Parties. After COCAP | NepalMonitor.org shared the data collected on incidents surrounding the first phase of local elections, Sushil Pyakurel, former commissioner of Nepal Human Rights Commission shared his analysis of the first phase and focused on how the government and Election Commission could minimize those lapses in the second phase of the election to ensure credible and impartial election. The floor was open for discussion and participants shared their views. During the discussion participants expressed:
• Their concern that without constitutional amendment conducting elections would be difficult in the district.
• Concerns regarding political parties mobilizing children in their campaign.
• The Need for leaders to maximize the participation of female candidates in vital positions.
• The wish that their concerns would be conveyed to the government.
Former Chief Justice and former Chief Commissioner NHRC, Kedar Nath Upadhaya provided the closing remarks.
